9 Tips to Put Safety Into Your Homes for you or your parents
Welcome Back to some more information on Aging or living Safely in Your Place(Home). Or my new name:
“THE NEW URBAN ENVIRONMENT”
I am emphasising the name Safely Living in Place and the “THE NEW URBAN ENVIRONMENT”, because what the words Aging in Place do is give a boomer, like myself, the feeling that I am not ready yet mentally. For my parents yes not me. For me it limits the scale of problems we can have in our homes. Truly it is for boomers , their parents but let’s not forget the young Vets coming home or home.
Ok 9 Bullet points to get to the meat of the ideas about your home.
Markets within walking distance
One level housing, Condos or apartments
Outside porch to sit
Parks nearby
Mixed communities (young and old)
Hand rails on showers
Doorless and no curb showers, ( increases property value)
Wheelchair accessible sink. With the new Farmer’s sink the creative choices can be developed and not loose the modern flare.
Restaurants, coffee houses and and entertainment center’s near by or within walking distance.
.
In future articles I will be talking about more advanced safety techniques that are not invasive to a boomer, their parents or Veterans to maintain their self esteem. Please keep in mind, although I do not mention it, these home changes are for health and and help us deal with changes as we mature.
I want to mention that my wife and I just sold our 5 bedroom house to downsize for just us and one child. I am feeling a lot of anxiety with where are we going. Maybe it happened simultaneously with my birthday. Either way, young boomers, I understand the throwing away the AARP letters that come without opening them. I am fighting this but will embrace the new horizon once the initial process is over.
The 9 ideas I wrought about today are for the intent not to scare you away from the idea of New Urban Environments. You should have these items in your home anyway for safety and to increase the value of your home.
Next time I will get more advanced with what can be done to your home. None of which should give you a sterilized feeling in the place you live.
Plus I will start to show you pictures of what I am describing so you can see what I am writing about.
See you next week.
